Eastern Kentucky is a rural area in the central part of the Appalachian Mountains. Kinship forms the basis of identity and affiliation for local people in these small communities. In many areas of Eastern Kentucky, people are confronted with longstanding economic and environmental challenges. HGP team member Helen Wasielewski is studying relationships and patterns of sharing, and is documenting the interaction between cultural ideas about sharing, resource exchange, and resilience.
